This month the Red & Yellow Creative School of Business has announced the appointment of a new Senior Lecturer, award-winning Copywriter, and Creative Director, Craig Strydom.
Strydom is the latest member to join the institution’s world-renowned faculty and will be teaching Advanced Diploma in Copywriting and the Higher Certificate in Creating Digital Content.
In a career spanning an impressive 20+ years, Strydom has worked for nine advertising agencies across three countries, including the US, Canada, and South Africa. As a Copywriter, Creative Director, and all-around content genius, he has won awards in New York, London, and Johannesburg, including One Show, London International Advertising Awards, and the New York Festivals. This included being a writer on the Oscar-winning, globally acclaimed documentary, Finding Sugarman.
His passion for the creative industry began while studying music at the Tshwane University of Technology. It was here that he took an interest in creating jingles for advertising. He is currently completing his Master’s in Creative Writing at the University of Cape Town.
At Red & Yellow, all programmes include a practical component, and the Advanced Diploma in Copywriting and the Higher Certificate in Creating Digital Content will be no different.
“I like to refer to these two options as exit programmes. The duration of each is only one year, however, once completed students will be equipped with the skills and tools needed to step confidently into the working world. These learners will have the advantage of being exposed to three weeks of practical experience, providing them with the knowledge required to apply what they have learned to the real world,” says Strydom.
The Higher Certificate in Creating Digital Content in particular, is an exciting course that blends the practical and theoretical skills necessary to create careers out of their ability to influence on social media channels. This is aimed at those wanting to make a living from blogging, vlogging or being an influencer, or those who want to work in agencies with globally-loved brands to create captivating content which goes viral in the media.
The course equips students with the skills to manage online communities, create a variety of content including blogs, social media posts, video, podcasts, web media, and more, and how to use it effectively to meet the business goals for other brands or for building their own personal brand.
“In addition, we at Red & Yellow also try to implement entrepreneurial skills across all courses. These lessons equip our students with the knowledge needed to know how to monetise their skills, ” he continues.
A highlight of his career includes being a finalist for the Susan Atefat Prize for Creative Non-Fiction in 2009. His work has also been published in numerous publications including Boards Magazine, Creativity, the New York Festivals, One Show, and Rolling Stone Magazine.
To date, Craig has worked on various household name brands including: Nando’s, MTN, Land Rover, Air Nova, Sprint, Maryland Lottery, and the National Aquarium in Baltimore.
