What is Project Management?
If a project is a temporary activity performed to create a unique outcome, project management is the method used to make this process happen. But this process doesn’t involve just slapping together a schedule at the last minute.
Project management is a consistent, well-defined and systematic process. It is both intuitive and systematic.
These days, many businesses have structured their central operations around projects, rather than around products, functions or geographic areas.
If you’re a project manager, you have to be very flexible and able to deal with any number and type of people. You will almost definitely be running several projects at once, with deadlines and meetings flying thick and fast. This project management pdf guide will help you understand what is necessary. Some of the industries where project managers are common include:
- Web development and technology firms
- Marketing, PR and media agencies
- Creative businesses (e.g. publishers, design studios, architects)
- Manufacturing businesses – from research and development through to factory-floor production
- Heavy industry, mining and engineering firms
- Construction companies
This way of thinking affects many aspects of the business. For one, departments need to be rethought so that they are compatible with projects. Employees are drawn from functional departments to make temporary teams and this comes with its own range of challenges. They need to develop their project management capacity by hiring awesome project managers – that means you. The duties of a project manager are many, and can be quite complicated. Project plans are essential.
